savi.

/ˈsɑʋi/ · clay

the light one. built for reading, and for the times you cannot ship a dark UI.

the room behind this page is kynnös · freshly turned earth, land newly broken by the plough

the word

savi /ˈsɑʋi/ (clay). the material before it is a thing. earth that takes the shape you press into it and holds it, worked warm and matte by hand, and once fired keeps that form for a thousand years.

a surface that takes the impression rather than making one. it holds what you put into it and adds nothing of its own, which is the whole ambition of a page you intend to be read.

savi is the light register, and it is not a colour inversion of kajo. it is warm and low in contrast at the surface level, with the accents doing more work because there is far less dark to lean on. a first-time visitor whose system asks for light gets this one.

the ground

every theme speaks the same role vocabulary. these six are the ones doing the heavy lifting in savi.

  • bgwarm off-white. not paper, not grey
  • surfacebarely a step from bg. separation is by edge
  • accentdarker than kajo's, so it holds on light
  • accent-tintthe fill behind an accent, kept legible
  • inknear black, warm
  • border-strongdoes the separation that shadow does not

the surface

a reading page assembled from the catalog: Avatar, Badge, Chip, Pullquote, the type scale and a measure that stays under seventy characters.

field notes

on working with clay

hrhelmi rantanen14 march · six minutes

everything worth making out of this material is made twice: once while it is soft enough to argue with, and once in the kiln, where it stops answering.

the material asks for patience before it gives you anything back. you wedge it, you centre it, and only then does it agree to hold a shape. most of the craft is in the waiting.

a fired pot is not the clay improved. it is the clay committed: every decision you pressed into it while it was soft, kept for a thousand years.

which is why the good potters go slowly at the start and quickly at the end. the shape is decided long before the wheel stops, and after that you are only tidying.

the surface should disappear, and the writing should not.

the timing

calm. moderate durations, no bounce. the theme is meant to feel settled rather than energetic, which is the whole reason it exists.

use it for

  • documentation and long-form reading
  • an embedded surface in a host app that is already light
  • screenshots and decks and print

not for

  • a launch page that has to stop someone mid-scroll
  • a dim room where the screen is the only light
  • a surface embedded in a host app that is already dark

you are standing in savi right now, and every page on this site renders in it, this one included. that is range, not a recommendation. it carries all of this without being built for any of it, and what it is built for is the other list.

the other registers

same components, same roles, a different reading of every one of them. nothing forks.
